In Religious Art, the image of the Pelican is a symbol of self-sacrifice. It is reminds us of our Lord, who suffered and died for us to give us eternal life and who nourishes us on our pilgrim way with the Holy Eucharist.

It also very often talks about the Mother Pelican who fed her dying young with her blood to revive them from death, but in turn lost her own life.

In the Holy Mother aureole, the blue color indicates the Celestial Glory and the gold represents Heaven’s Light winning against dark forces.

The letters “MP OY” are an abbreviation in Greek for “Mater Theos” – the Mother of God.

I have never dedicated an artwork for a particular group or cause, but “HOLY MOTHER: Self-Sacrifice” is dedicated to brave men and women of our Nation, who, like the Mother Pelican, have sacrificed their lives for us. They are represented by the U.S. flag that the Holy Mother wears around Her shoulders…
